What is Cultivation?
- I've finally started to get the parts for my DB augments, and after Health Regen, I'm not sure if I should go with Affinity (2 slots) or Element (1 slot x2). Is it better to get the +10% Affinity or the +30x2 element damage for DBs?
- To install, go to nativePC in your MHW directory and drop the folder titled 'common' into nativePC. If you do not already have a nativePC folder then move the one in my file to your MHW directory. Note: This mod does not make regular augments cost 0, only custom upgrades. I will work on a mod that makes regular augments cost 0 soon.
- Slot-based augment This is the normal augmenting method for Iceborne and requires you to use a weapon’s built-in slots in order to perform upgrades. Instead of using Streamstones, you now use.
Cultivation is the act of growing plants, bugs, and other essential materials used to craft consumables. Most of these materials can be gathered during expeditions, though it can be tedious and time-consuming. Being able to grow them at the research base is much more convenient.
Is Slot Increase augmentation good? I would have to say in most cases it’s a NO. The only time I would take this is on a Rarity 6 weapon taking Lifesteal/Slot/Slot to get an extra medium slot. But only on “very specific builds” wherein the medium outweighs 10% affinity and some flat attack. That’s a lot of filters. Augments in Iceborne are different to world in that, rather than getting 1, 2 or 3 augments depending on rarity, weapons now have a number of 'slots' to fit augments in, based again on weapon rarity. In addition, each augment is weighed differently, depending on perceived usefulness.
Cultivating materials costs research points and is one of the best investments for the currency. It allows you to stockpile a hefty amount of items to make healing items, traps, slinger ammo, and other useful consumables you should bring on quests.
Cultivation is unlocked by visiting the botanical research center in Astera. At first, you will only be able to cultivate one type of material. You can upgrade the research center’s features by completing various deliveries and optional quests.

Recommended Materials to Cultivate
Honey
Honey is used in making potent healing items like mega potions, first-aid meds+, and max potions. Because of this, you are likely to burn through your supply very quickly. This is especially true if you always carry some honey with you to craft more restorative items in the heat of battle. Try to maintain a good stockpile of honey at all times.
Mandragora
Mandragora is the key ingredient used in crafting max potions. There are very few places to gather it during expeditions, so being able to grow them by yourself is extremely advantageous.
Flashbugs
Flashbugs are used to make flashpods, a type of slinger ammo that momentarily stuns monsters when fired. It also forces airborne foes to crash down, briefly giving you time to attack them without restraint. Flashpods are very effective against Rathalos, Rathian, Legiana, and even the elder dragons. It is easy to burn through a stash of flashpods, especially when running optional quests and investigations multiple times. Be sure to keep a hefty supply of them through cultivation.
Might Seeds
If you think you have stockpiled enough materials to make consumables, you can try to earn some money by growing might seeds. These sell for 140 z each for a good profit. You can also use them during quests to temporarily increase your attack power.
Other Materials
Bitterbugs, blue mushrooms, herbs, and sleep herbs are some of the materials that you will also likely deplete very quickly if you do not take time to gather them during expeditions. Cultivate as much as you need, since you will accumulate a good amount of research points just by going through the main story.

What is Augmenting?
Augmenting is the act of further enhancing weapons and armor past their maximum refinement level. For weapons, augmenting allows you to infuse them with additional properties. Augmenting armor, on the other hand, raises their upgrade limit, allowing you to reach even higher defense values.
You will be able to augment equipment after completing the post-game quests Beyond the Blasting Scales and Thunderous Rumble in the Highlands. Clearing them allows you to take on threat level 2 and 3 investigations that randomly reward streamstones. These materials are quite rare, so you may need to run investigations several times to get the ones you need.
Types of Steamstones
Material | Description | How to Obtain |
---|---|---|
Streamstone Shard | Secondary material in augmenting rarity 6 weapons and rarity 1 to 5 armor | Clear threat level 1 investigations |
Streamstone | Secondary material in augmenting rarity 7 weapons and rarity 6 to 7 armor | Clear threat level 2 investigations |
Gleaming Streamstone | Secondary material in augmenting rarity 8 weapons and armor | Clear threat level 3 investigations |
Sullied Streamstone | Become warrior’s steamstones after appraisal. Primary material in augmenting rarity 6 and 7 weapons. | Clear threat level 2 investigations |
Shining Steamstone | Become hero’s streamstones after appraisal. Primary material in augmenting rarity 8 weapons. | Clear threat level 3 investigation |
Augmenting Weapons
Augmenting weapons requires the most farming, as you will need either a warrior’s or hero’s streamstone specific to your weapon. For example, augmenting a rarity 8 great sword requires one hero’s streamstone: great sword.
The number of augments you can infuse your weapon with depends on its rarity. You can have up to three augments on rarity 6 weapons, two on rarity 7, and one on rarity 8.
Weapon augments cannot be removed or replaced once they have been applied. Be sure to choose those that suit your playstyle and skills.
